The Pig Pen at Albert Texas

The Pig Pen food truck is a tiny kitchen in a tiny town that boasts HUGE flavor. It is located in the heart of the Hill Country in a little town named Albert. It is about an hour’s drive from Austin and close to famous LuckenbachTexas. It seems like a strange place to drive for a good meal, but trust me; The Pig Pen is well worth the drive.

Chef Joseph Moreno is the mastermind behind the amazing food at the Pig Pen. I have been working with Joseph for over 5 months and I have yet to taste anything of his I disliked. This is an amazing task, since I can be a stern critic.

This is become one of my very favorite places to talk about and eat at (even if I do work there). What makes the Pig Pen’s food so special is that it is ever changing. Joseph has complete creative control of what he is allowed to create and serve from the truck. So our specials board is always changing (sometimes multiple times a day!)

The regular menu includes:

  • Fries
  • Burgers
  • Pulled Pork Tacos and Sliders
  • Fried Chicken Tacos

The loaded fries are one of the most popular items along with our bacon jalapeno burger and cheese burger. The loaded fries have sautéed peppers and goat cheese over the from-scratch French fries and served with chipotle ranch on the side.

Another important reason the Pig Pen is so amazing, is everything is made fresh from scratch. You won’t ever see Joseph (or I allowing him to) use a bag of frozen fries or preformed burger patties! Since the food is always evolving based on how Joseph is feeling that day, you never know what will be on the special’s board. One of our recent specials has been very popular.

“Animal Burger” This behemoth is the ½lb beef burger patty with cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickled onion, pickles, kimchi, bacon and a fried egg.

Another special which is a little out-of-the-box but has been a recent hit is the beef heart tacos. Yes, I said beef HEART, as in the actual heart of a bovine. Cooked very rare to preserve tenderness, this very beefy flavored cut of meat is served on corn tortillas with a corn and bean salsa, queso fresco, pickled radishes, slices of fresh avocado and some cilantro for garnish.

Friday nights are STEAK NIGHTS!!!! Yes, in the middle of nowhere at an open-air bar you can be served a fresh, thick, juicy steak from a food truck. The sides are always different and based on what looked best to Joseph at the market or from the produce provider that day. This means, one night you could have your steak brought to you over gnocchi with brussel sprouts or over our loaded fries with chipotle ranch.

I will be posting a lot more about the Pig Pen and Chef Jospeh and the fantastic food!!! Look for my future posts.
